SAE 1020 tubing is a low carbon steel type with about 0.18–0.23% carbon, 0.30–0.60% manganese, and trace amounts of phosphorus and sulfur. This composition provides the tubing very good weldability and fair machinability with reasonable strength and toughness. It generally exhibits a tensile strength of 395–540 MPa and a yield strength of about 295 MPa, with an elongation of about 25–30%. SAE 1020 is cold-workable, normalizable, or carburizable in order to increase surface hardness.
